HELP! Infection at week 4 post PMMA
1 year 9 months ago #1308719260At about 3.5 weeks, I had sex with out a condom. I also shaved near the base of my shaft to try and see any irregularities better. About 3 days after sex and 1 day after shaving I got an obvious infection. Stinging, soreness, redness, and swelling(to the point of some stretch marks). Based on timeline, i'm not sure if it's due to the sex or shaving.
I've attached photos at week 2 and week 4.
I'm looking for advice from anybody, but specifically would like to here from those that have experienced injection. What they did to help and what their outcomes were?
I've just gotten a prescription for antibiotics, but what to know what else I should be doing(heat? cold? etc). At what point should I be taking crazy action(go to the ER?)
Thank you all in advance!

You’re the second person in the last few weeks who’s had an infection following PMMA . It’s odd given that so few instances have been reported in the past.

1 year 9 months ago #1308719273About 18 hours after starting antibiotics it is still getting worse. It got to the point of swelling were skin broke(with a little help from me) and a lot of puss came out, maybe 5-20mL hard to say. Do you think 4.5 weeks after I lost any of the PMMA, or is that all pretty set?
And yes, I read the entire other recent post about infection. I reached out to see if he had any advice.
It's just crazy to think sex 3.5 weeks after the procedure could cause this when people on here say sex 2 weeks after is fine. Maybe the more conservative 6 weeks AD said to wait has some merit.
At this point I'm just praying there's no serious long term issue.

Re: HELP! Infection at week 4 post PMMA
1 year 9 months ago #1308719282Not sure if I lost any PMMA from the drain, but of so it appears I didn't lose all. We'll see in a few weeks.
I think I've dodged an ER visit and drastic consequences, but we'll see on that too.
The best advice I have to all, is to be very cautious in the 6 weeks after procedure. Also get antibiotics immediately with any issue, or just have them on standby.
I'll post pictures/give updates later.

I remember getting back to the hotel room and I think it was damn near immediate I started on Keflex that they sent me home with.
I also waited until my entry points were closed before I showered, figuring "dont drink the water" might also apply to showering with open wounds.
Alcohol wipes were another thing I brought in excess.

Re: HELP! Infection at week 4 post PMMA
1 year 9 months ago #1308719319The other sessions you had no problems? Only with your third round?
Maybe AD is using another Pmma-Brand? They also changed over the years.. Metacrill to LinneaSafe.. maybe now another brand?
Does someone know how many infections about Pmma has been reported on this platform 2024?

But I'd pump the brakes hard at taking the next leap and presuming we're on a TV medical drama.
I would put the odds of an infection making its way in during the procedure at almost zero.
What I wouldn't say "no" to is the possibility of the shower situation in the hotels not being 100% sterile, whether that's an issue of plumbing, water treatment, etc.
You get your procedure, you shower, in comes bacteria either from water, or from spray off of the shower walls that maybe weren't bleached - I could see it.
But Linnea isn't bootleg whiskey distilled in some guy's shack, and a sterile room is a sterile room.

In no way am I trying to dismiss or downplay these two incidents, but given the sheer sample size of progress reporting going back to 2011, it isn't out of the ordinary to eventually get an anomalous back-to-back set of uncommon cases (which by the way didn't happen at the same time AND presumably many patients have undergone this procedure before & after these reported cases).
In other words, this is no cause for alarm, but definitely worth keeping an eye on. Infections can and do happen, even in the most benign medical & dental settings. These occurrences abide by a statistical likelihood, so the fact we're actually seeing this reported twice in a month after many years of journals is quite remarkable to be quite frank.
Until such time that there is something more definitive, either by way of patient reporting or by Avanti Derma themselves, I don't have a reason to believe this is an Avanti Derma or PMMA matter at this time.
And to answer your question PmmaFan, I don't honestly recall any other serious infection reports this year, in fact I hardly recall any such reports beyond a handful of notables from a long time ago (although I'm sure some others have come and gone with so much time) since 2011 with respect to Avanti Derma. Granted, not everyone who undergoes procedures reports back to the forums, but I believe enough do that any truly alarming matter would not go unnoticed (think Silicone Injections or Silicone Implant reports).
Thanks for chiming in Zep83, and looking forward to Ben3's update whenever he's ready. I am sincerely wishing you the both a successful recovery through what is undoubtedly freak incidents in general for most injectable phalloplasty, and both cases can serve as a good learning opportunity for all parties involved.

Re: HELP! Infection at week 4 post PMMA
1 year 9 months ago #1308719335I dodged an ER visit, so for all of you curious I didn't get a culture. Haven't done a real measurement at 100% but just quick measurements in the morning show I didn't lose all the PMMA, conservatively gained at least 0.5".
As far as cause, I can only speculate. I am not on some witch hunt against AD and agree the chances the PMMA was tainted are very low(I am 90% sure I was given Linnea Safe btw). I think there is some merit to the shower water theory. Also, I did have sex at ~1.5 weeks without a condom. I read here people have done that and been fine and so was I. The weird thing with my infection is that it happened ~3.5 week post procedure, of course it's possible stuff can stay dormant.
One weird comment, I have read here most doctors(even previously AD) recommended 2 weeks without sex. I was surprised when in person they told me 6 weeks(maybe that's a sign they have seen more infections and made the wait time more conservative??)
Zep83, praying for a full recovery for you. Your immune system will figure this out!
