If this happened did it happen in the first few months, after at least a year, or both? Furthermore, even for those who have had PMMA, a good many of them either (1) haven't had it long enough to assess if there is any significant softening and/or (2) never found any concern with "the softness" of their collagen to pay any mind to it over a given period of time. For me, I do know that some of my smaller nodules did soften with time, but for as whether or not the entire shaft *softened* over time is hard to say... likely not much if anything at all. I'm sure this may vary person-to-person but to be frank, but I don't recall any reports that suggested the PMMA was "so hard that it presented a problem." I also had a small void after my third touchup round that seems to have filled in. So it seems as if it did get more even over time. My first round was nearly three years ago, and I've gotten two more full sessions and then three touch ups since then.
